The Crystal Lake Police Department recently completed its participation in the Illinois Department of Transportation’s (IDOT) Sustained Traffic Enforcement Program conducted for the holiday season. Numerous Law Enforcement agencies throughout Illinois participated in this statewide effort from December 16th through January 2nd to save lives by encouraging motorists to refrain from electronic communication violations, drinking and driving, and to buckle up during late-night hours.

During the mobilization, the Department:

      • Stopped an additional 69 motorists for traffic violations

      • Issued a total of 66 additional traffic citations, which included:

        •  34 citations for unlawful use of an electronic communications device

        •  13 citations for speeding

        •  9 citations for failure to wear a seat belt

        •  7 citations for operation of an uninsured motor vehicle

        •  2 citation for other moving violations and equipment

        •  1 citation for DUI

In addition, four subjects were arrested for the following offenses:

  • One subject for Driving Under the Influence

  • Three subjects for Speeding 35 + MPH over the posted speed limit

The recent law enforcement crackdown was funded by federal traffic safety funds through IDOT’s Division of Traffic Safety and is part of the statewide “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” and “Click It or Ticket” campaigns. The Crystal Lake Police Department will participate in such campaigns in the future, and encourages motorists to buckle up their seatbelts every time-every trip, don’t use cellphones or other electronic communication devices unless hands-free, and never drive intoxicated.
