Well 19 Transmission Main - cropped

Project Description

The City relies on a system of deep and shallow wells to provide water to the community. All of the wells in Crystal Lake obtain their source water from geologic layers consisting of sand and gravel (shallow wells) or glacial sandstone (deep wells).  The City currently operates eleven water producing wells. As the City has grown and developed, water demand has increased. There is a need to add additional water capacity by constructing a new deep well, transmission main, and control building.

New Deep Well 19 is located at the Wastewater Treatment Plant 2 site and is currently under construction. With the first stage nearly complete, the second stage is the construction of a transmission main, followed by a third stage to construct a control building. The second stage transmission main will convey water pumped from the newly drilled well to recently constructed Water Treatment Plant 2 located on Highland Avenue.

Current Project Update

  • August 15, 2024: The last of the proposed items have been installed and the contractor will be working on restoration over the entire site in the coming weeks.

  • July 31, 2024: Water main work on the Lundahl Middle School property is complete and the contractor is working on restoration prior to the beginning of the school year. The last of the water main was installed across McHenry Avenue last week and the contractor will begin final testing of the water main. The coming weeks will include restoration of the remaining areas within the project limits.

  • June 13, 2024: The contractor began installing portions of the transmission main on the property of Lundahl Middle School. This work must be completed while school is not in session, and will continue for 3-4 weeks around this location.

  • May 30, 2024: The contractor begin installing the new transmission main north of Dartmoor Avenue just east of McHenry Avenue. This work will continue north by crossing the creek two times, and running through the west side of Knack Park in the coming weeks.

  • May 16, 2024: Deep Well 19 drilling is substantially complete.  The next phase of the project is to install a 12” raw water transmission main to the newly constructed Water Treatment Plant #2. This project will connect the Deep Well #19 to Water Treatment Plant #2 with about 7,500 feet of 12” transmission main.  The contractor will begin construction on Dartmoor Dr. next week.  Dartmoor Dr. will be closed to one lane of traffic while they excavate the closed lane to install the new water main.   This project will work from south to north.
  • April 2, 2024: Berger Excavating was awarded the construction contract for the transmission main installation. Work expected to begin in May.
