COFFEE ROASTER FIRE – 5005 Northwest Highway
Crystal Lake, IL – At 10:50 PM, the Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department was notified of a possible structure fire at Conscious Cup Coffee Roasters. A passerby noticed flames coming from the roof above the business and called 911. An employee was in the building roasting coffee at the time the fire started. The fire was discovered to be in the exhaust duct work of the commercial coffee roaster. The employee had used two fire extinguishers on the fire before the fire department arrived.
The first fire unit arrived on location at 10:56 PM and reported a significant amount of smoke in the business. The fire was confined to the duct work of the roaster and was quickly extinguished with less than 50 gallons of water. The business sustained smoke damage and will remain closed until repairs are made and the McHenry County Department of Health approves resuming food service.
Damage is estimated at $20,000. The building is not equipped with a fire alarm or fire sprinkler system. There were no injuries to any civilians or firefighters. Crystal Lake Fire Rescue was assisted by several area fire departments.
The cause of the fire appears to be related to a buildup of roasting material in the duct work lining that ignited. The incident is under investigation by Crystal Lake Fire Rescue investigators.
