Gift Card Scams
Protect yourself against gift card scams. Before you purchase gift cards, read the following examples; if any of these apply, you may be involved in a gift card scam:
- Person asks you to purchase gift cards as a method of payment.
- Person claims to be from the IRS.
- Person claims to be an officer, and a family member has been arrested and needs bail.
- Person claims you owe taxes and threatens you with arrest.
- Person claims to be a family member overseas who has been robbed and needs money.

Financial Crimes
If you believe that you have been the victim of a financial crime, please come to the Crystal Lake Police Department with all pertinent information to make a report. Contact the appropriate financial institutions and credit bureaus as soon as possible to report discovered fraud. The Crystal Lake Police Department primarily investigates crimes that actually occurred within the City of Crystal Lake. Internet and other crimes where the suspect and/or transaction location occurred outside the City of Crystal Lake should be reported to the appropriate local jurisdiction or by internet at one of the links on the right-hand column.
