Current Project Update

  • August 22, 2024: The contractor is working on parkway restoration and pavement milling.  Driveway installation and final surface paving is scheduled for this week.   

  • August 15, 2024: The asphalt binder was placed on the west side of Dole Avenue. The contractor will now work on the grass parkways and adjusting manhole frames to prepare for final paving. 

  • August 8, 2024: Concrete work will be completed this week. Asphalt base will be installed early next week. Landscape restoration will follow along with prepping for final paving. 

  • August 1, 2024: The contractor continues to work on roadway excavation and concrete on the west side of Dole Avenue north of Route 14. Curb and gutter is expected to be poured in the next week, followed by the asphalt base. Sidewalk gaps between Crystal Lake Avenue and Woodstock Street are also being poured as part of this project. A retaining wall is being constructed near Elmhurst Street to support the new sidewalk.

  • July 8, 2024: The section of Dole between Lake Shore Drive and Route 14 is now substantially complete and open to two way traffic. North of Route 14, the contractor is finishing concrete work and prepping for asphalt base on the east side of Dole Avenue. Traffic will be moving over to the new asphalt base this week to begin work on the west side of the road. 

  • June 13, 2024: The contractor has been pouring concrete curb, driveways, and sidewalk south of Rt. 14 this week. The east side of the roadway will be have the asphalt base paved next week. North of Rt. 14, crews are excavating the east side of the roadway to prepare for concrete placement which is expected next week. 

  • May 30, 2024: The contractor is excavating the east side of the roadway south of Rt 14 in preparation for asphalt and concrete work. Crews north of Rt 14 are continuing to install the remaining sections of water main.

  • May 16, 2024: The contractor is placing concrete on the west side of Dole Avenue south of US Route 14 for the rest of the week.  An asphalt paving company will be on site Monday to begin asphalt prep work. Work north of US Route 14 continues with water service line connections and side street water main work.  

  • May 9, 2024: The contractor is placing capping stone on the west-side pavement base south of US Route 14 this week and will work on the west-side concrete curb/gutter next week.  The water main installation north of US Route 14 has been completed and awaiting sampling. 

  • April 11, 2024:  Stage 3 of the project (Dole Ave. between Oak St. and Crystal Lake Ave.) has begun. The contractor has started milling the old pavement and continues the watermain and water service line work.

  • April 4, 2024:  The contractor is installing water services between the new main and the houses on Dole Ave. Work is also taking place on remaining sanitary sewer services and water main connections. Nicor is expecting to be out of the stage 2 work zone by the week of April 15th.

  • Stage 3 of the project (Dole Ave. between Oak St. and Crystal Lake Ave.) will begin next week. Staff delivered construction notices last week and the changeable message board signs have been out to notify drivers of the new stage.

  • March 28, 2024 - The recently installed water main has passed the pressure and water quality tests. The contractor will now shift to installing water services between the new main and the houses. Work is taking place on remaining storm and sanitary sewer installations.

    Stage 3 of the project (Dole Ave. between Oak St. and Crystal Lake Ave.) will begin the week of April 8th. Staff delivered the Construction Notices identifying that northbound traffic on Dole Ave. will be detoured onto Oak St. and then to Crystal Lake Ave. Southbound traffic on Dole will remain open.

  • March 21, 2024 -  The contractor is sampling and testing the newly installed water main. If the samples pass, the contractor will install all the individual water service lines to the homes. This will take approximately two weeks. Sewer work will take place at this time as well.

    Once the underground crews finish south of US 14, they will start underground work on the next stage (Oak Street to Crystal Lake Avenue). Work north of Oak Street should start the first week of April.

    South of US 14 crews will focus on the roadway base, curb and gutter, sidewalks etc. that needs to be completed by the end of June. Work will be occurring north of Oak Street and south of US 14 at the same time in April.

  • March 14, 2024 -  The contractor is on schedule with this project, and the water main installation for this stage is nearly finished. The contractor will test the main this week and begin water service line installation next week.

  •  March 7, 2024 - Two crews are focusing on installation of the water main this week and next. After the main is installed, the crews will focus on installing the water services to the adjacent homes.

  • February 29, 2024 -  Two underground crews are on site.  The first crew is installing watermain between Lake Shore Dr. and Eagle St.  The second crew is working on sanitary sewer installation and will begin storm sewer work soon.  NICOR has finished installing the main between US 14 and will transition to working on services. re 

  • February 22, 2024 - Nicor is completing their work at the US Route 14 intersection. Two underground crews are on site working on sanitary sewer and the new water main. The next several weeks will focus on water main work.

  • February 15, 2024 -  The detour was installed Monday that takes southbound Dole Ave. to US Route 14, McHenry Ave., Lake St., Lake Ave., Lakeshore Dr., and back to Dole Ave.  Northbound Dole Ave. is open with one lane northbound. Pavement milling will begin this week.  Milling, pavement saw cutting, and erosion control measures will continue next week.  NICOR is working on Dole Ave. between Pierson St. and US Route 14.

  • February 8, 2023 -  NICOR continues to relocate existing underground utilities in preparation for Stage 2 Construction. The City contractor is expected to begin Monday, February 12.

  • January 17, 2024 – Nicor will be mobilizing to Dole Avenue in the coming week for utility relocations prior to the start of the roadway work. Stage 2 of the roadway work is expected to begin in mid-February, weather permitting, along Dole Avenue between Lake Shore Drive and Rt 14. During Stage 2 of the project, southbound traffic along Dole will be detoured along Rt 14 to McHenry Avenue to Lake Street. Northbound travel lanes will remain open throughout the stage. 

  • November 30, 2023: Stage 1 is substantially completed. NICOR is still in the area to complete relocations. Stage 2 will begin in February of 2024, which includes Dole Ave. from Lake Shore Dr. to IL Rt. 14.

  • November 16, 2023:  Concrete work and binder layers of the hot-mix asphalt (HMA) for this stage has been completed. This week, the contractor also started the surface lift of the HMA along with landscaping. Pavement marking, signage, and other restoration will be completed by November 22nd allowing for two-way traffic.

  • November 9, 2023:  The contractor continues to install concrete driveways and sidewalks.  The hot-mix asphalt will be placed next week with good temperatures and weather.  The NICOR contractor has relocated all utilities that were hindering the contractor’s progress in this stage. NICOR has additional work on other stages of the project, and NICOR will continue to work into the winter on these additional relocations.

  • October 19, 2023:  Southbound traffic has been shifted over to the west side of the road. Northbound drivers will continue to follow the detour. 

  • October 6, 2023: The roadway base is being prepared and the curb is being poured. Asphalt binder and landscaping work will take place next week. The northbound detour will remain in place until this stage of the project is completed. Southbound Dole Avenue remains open to all traffic.

  • September 28, 2023:  Curb, sidewalk, and driveway removal on the east side of the road is beginning. Concrete work will begin next week and the roadway base is currently being prepared.

  • September 21, 2023: The contractor has begun installing water service lines. Once the underground work is finished, the contractor will start curb/sidewalk/driveway removal on the east side of the road. ComEd and Nicor are still relocating their utilities.

  • September 14, 2023-  The watermain installation is complete, and testing and water quality sampling are continuing the rest of the week. ComEd and Nicor continue to relocate their utilities for the roadway improvements. Next week the contractor will work on water services and storm sewer.

  • August 31, 2023- The underground contractor continued with installing the water main between US Route 14 and Oak Street. This work is expected to be complete next week. The contractor must pass pressure testing and water quality tests before beginning to connect service lines to the new main. Intren is onsite to relocate utility poles. Staff is coordinating with Nicor to ensure they adjust their facilities that are in conflict with the project.

  • August 24, 2023- This week the underground contractor continued water main removal and replacement, with the work continuing through next week. Intren (a subcontractor to ComEd) mobilized yesterday to begin utility pole relocation. 

  • August 22, 2023-The contractor saw cut and removed areas of pavement on Dole Ave. Water main work will start the week of August 14th. Southbound Dole Avenue traffic remains open to traffic.  

  • August 17, 2023- This week the contractor began water main removal and replacement. The contractor’s schedule includes a few weeks of this work before moving on to other items required for the full reconstruction of this section of Dole Avenue.

  • August 3, 2023-  The Stage 1 Detour for northbound traffic is in place. Next week’s work will include saw-cutting, pavement and curb removal. Water main work will start the week of August 14th. Southbound Dole Avenue traffic will remain open to traffic.

  •  July 27, 2023- The Stage 1 Detour for northbound traffic only will start on August 2. ComEd has completed tree removal work and remaining pole relocation work that will take place under the detour. Water main work will start the week of August 7.

  • July 13, 2023- Changeable message board signs have been set up on all four approaches to the U.S. Route 14/ Dole Avenue intersection to announce the Stage 1 construction. Utility relocation work (Nicor and ComEd) should start shortly. The Stage 1 Detour is for northbound traffic only. Southbound traffic will remain open to traffic.

  • July 6, 2023- Changeable message board signs have been set up on Dole Ave. to announce the Stage 1 construction scheduled to begin July 17th. The Stage 1 Detour is for northbound traffic only, while the southbound direction will be open to traffic.

  • June 30, 2023- Changeable message board signs will be set up July 3rd along Dole Ave. to announce the Stage 1 construction tentatively scheduled to begin July 17th. The Stage 1 Detour is for northbound traffic only. The southbound direction will be open to traffic during Stage 1. Additional signage will be installed for local businesses including Andy’s, Lucky Brake, and AKF Martial Arts. A shorter detour can be used by these customers using Carpenter St. to Oriole Tr. The Stage 1 completion date is October 27, 2023.

    Stage 2 (US 14 to Lake Shore Dr.) will start in the Spring of 2024 and will be complete by June 21, 2024. Stage 3 (Oak St. to Crystal Lake Ave.) will begin June 21, 2024 and be complete by October 18, 2024.

  • June 27, 2023 – Lenny Hoffman Excavating was awarded the construction contract for the Dole Avenue improvement project. Work is anticipated to begin on July 17th, 2023. Stage 1 of the project will be along Dole Avenue between Route 14 and Oak Street, and work in this stage will continue through October 27th, 2023. This work will require a detour of northbound traffic along Dole Avenue within the work zone, and will remain installed for the duration of Stage 1.

  • February 17. 2023: The City hosted an open house at City Hall on February 16, 2023 to discuss the proposed improvements along Dole Avenue. Exhibits that were available at the open house can be viewed in the links and resources section.

  • February 1, 2023: The City will be hosting an open house public meeting on February 16, 2023 at City Hall from 5pm – 7pm to discuss proposed improvements and detours during construction.

  • September 30, 2021: Gewalt Hamilton Associates was awarded the design engineering contract.

Project Description

 

This project will include full pavement reconstruction, replacement of existing water main and services, new sidewalks, and bike lane enhancements along Dole Avenue between Lake Shore Drive and Crystal Lake Avenue, and will begin in July of 2023. Driveways, businesses, and Park District facilities will remain open during construction.

The project will be split into three different stages of construction.

  • Stage 1 – Dole Avenue from Rt. 14 to Oak Street will take place from July 2023 thru October 27, 2023. Northbound traffic along Dole Avenue within the work zone will be detoured during this stage.
  • Stage 2 – Dole Avenue from Lakeshore Drive to Rt. 14 will take place from February 2024 to June 28, 2024. Southbound traffic along Dole Avenue within the work zone will be detoured during this stage.
  • Stage 3 – Dole Avenue from Oak Street to Crystal Lake Avenue will take place at the completion of Stage 2 (anticipated June 28, 2024) and will be completed by November 2024. Northbound traffic within the work zone will be detoured throughout this stage.
